Kidney stones are small “pebbles” of salt and mineral in the urine that can develop in one or both of the kidneys. The most common symptom is severe pain. Most stones pass on their own, but medical procedures are used to remove some kidney stones.

Anyone can get a kidney stone, but some people are more likely to get one. Kidney stones are quite common and usually affect people aged 30 to 60 years. They affect men more than women. Overweight and obese people are more likely to get a kidney stone than people of normal weight. Some 2.5 million Malaysians have some form of kidney disease and it is no thanks to their unhealthy lifestyle and eating habits. The medical name for stones in the kidneys is Nephrolithiasis. If the stones cause severe pain, this is known as renal colic.
