Which is More Important for Malaysians?
Oil subsidy reduction gave a shock for our entire nation. The government justifies that BR1M will be helpful. The increase in BRIM payment is a one-off payment and while it will mitigate a sharp increase in fuel hike it will not help household manage their meagre finances. It is a simple common sense that when petrol price is hiked, automatically the price of things, and services will raise up.
Is it logical to compensate daily life expenses with one-off payment?
BR1M has a lag time of two or more months after the Budget is tabled. Yet fuel is a weekly, even daily, cost for the poor and represents a higher proportion of their income than it does for wealthier households. BR1M is a temporary injection. It falls far short of what the poor need.
To get more response from the nations, iTimes.my went for a survey tour around Klang Valley. We manage to gather many views and comments from the public.
“This is a total unfair move done by the government. They are not considering about the people at all. RM0.20 is a high hike, I beg the government to consider, please,” says Marimuthu, Bangsar.
Theinmoli from Sentul says, “BR1M is a good move by the government. I am also a BR1M recipient and im very grateful to that. Yet, if you are asking us to compensate the oil price and BR1M, I don’t think that is a wise idea people with great mind like ministers take.”
“I am great Barisan Nasional supporter. But that doesn’t mean we have to support every policy that the government is making. We have a voice too. BR1M is seriously not going to be helpful at all. I know even the government knows that it is not suffiecient enough”, said Abdul Manaf.
‘This government always like this. Don’t worry, 1 year before election the oil price will reduce to RM0.15. Then, will increase again as RM0.20. We know, we know”, said Jason Lim.
There many other comments but we did not include. But overall the price hike have really brought a negative impact to the people and it might turn around agaist the current government. However, we hope the government will find a better way to resolve this in a better way. They always have a solid reason for every action taken.
