Hindus Wake UP, No Forgiveness For Trust Abuse
What can I eat? People started showing concern on their daily food. iTimes is doing the research and providing information’s on foods that comply to Hinduism. Major issue that Hindus face is the mixture of beef or pork in any form of their food. iTimes managed to get an exclusive interview of two individual who were in the food industry for many years and also a consumer.
“Multiple restaurants and chains across Malaysia are using mixed meat is a massive food fraud. It is to be said that cheap beef was passed off as lamb in popular dishes served at many restaurants. This clearly shows how unsuspecting customers are cheated on daily basis on the named food that they consume,” said Kavitha Selvamohan an ex restaurant owner.
“The issue does raise religious concerns as some Hindus who may eat lamb meat would prefer not to consume beef as cows are considered sacred in their religion. Hindus are predominantly vegetarian but our estimates are that some minorities are meat eaters and it is important that they know what is being served to them,” added Ms Kavitha.
“What is concern here is not just about fraud or wrong doings when it comes to religious believes, but also other issues. How good are their practices in the kitchen; if they are defrauding customers how safe are they in other aspects? The major issue customers facing are from perspective of trust. Although there are no issues with the food safety for the people who have consumed this beef served as lamb now as far as one know, but it does raise issues of trust and religious abuse. Customers who are visiting these restaurants are not getting what they actually ordered but an inferior product,” stressed Kavitha.
Another businessman who is a food caterer said that it is not new for the food industry to fake lamb meat to buffalo meat. “This is a very normal thing when comes to food industry. Business owners are only focusing on making huge profit but they don’t bother about the right and wrong deeds. As I know this also happens widely in catering business especially when orders are above 500 pax. Sometimes even the caterers are not aware when the suppliers fake the good. Lamb has a higher value and expensive to buy than beef and this type of offence not only deceives customers but also creates an unfair trading advantage over those business that are operating legally,” said Rajah.
I”m not really sure who are responsible for this or wether we have any bodies to monitor this. But actions need to be taken seriously. Just like how the Muslims have a body to monitor on the foods and they are doing a great job. We should learn from them and move accordingly,” he added further.
Mr. A. Murugan, a consumer said, “consumers need to be more alert in what they eat. We can’t 100% trust on what we eat outside. People should immediately make a report to the police and then to the consumer affairs for further actions if they find there is fake in their food. No forgiveness for those who abuse trust, especially consumers. We pay the money and on top of it we get cheated.
Most other actions that come naturally are a direct result of being raised as a Hindu, but the biggest question now is, does eating beef (or non-vegetarian food for that matter) make a Hindu any less of a Hindu?
